Operations Director at Outdoor Adventure and Mythology Summer Day Camp

Title: Operations Director

Employment Status: Exempt/Seasonal

Company Summary:

Plato Learning operates outdoor mythology-based day camps for kids ages 7-15. We create a world where monsters, myth, and magic transport kids out of the mortal realm into one where they are empowered to develop new skills, take risks, solve problems, and ultimately become Heroes. Now in thirteen locations spanning from NYC to California, Plato Learning uses actors, live-action role-play, and physically and mentally engaging activities to bring myths to life.

Are you ready to join the team and accept our call to adventure?

Job Summary:
We are hiring energetic leaders and organized role models to serve as summer Operations Directors at several camp locations. Operations Directors act as the Health Supervisor and maintain all the resources for camp, keeping the adventure running safely and smoothly for all ‘demigod’ campers and staff that come to Plato Learning for intense hero-training, epic adventures, and unforgettable other-worldly experiences.

What does that mean? (Job Responsibilities)

  • Act as the All-Seeing Argus. Like the many-eyed giant, Argus, the Operations Director sees all. Responsible for ordering and tracking camp materials, the Operations Director provides materials where they are needed like a magician.
  • Hone Your Healing Abilities. Using the virtues of Apollo and training exercises, Operations Directors become masters of the healing arts and act as camp’s Health Supervisor. They keep the Health Area clean and well-stocked for any demigod injuries, while swiftly administering first aid to up to 60 campers and 12 staff members so they can return to adventuring.
  • As Prepared as Pegasus. A master of procedure, the Operations Director is prepared for any scenario, whether it be inclement weather or an emergency alert over the radio. Under the guidance of the Camp Director, the Operations Director helps spur everyone into action, making sure procedures run smoothly when the unexpected springs forth.
  • Build Partnerships with Mortals. Working with outside vendors is part of what makes camp run like a well-oiled adventure, whether they be park officials, bus transportation, rain-day locations, or mere mortals wandering by camp. Operations Directors make sure communications run smoothly and that we treat the spaces we share with the utmost care.
  • Guardian of the Cave of Wonders. Our camps operate in public outdoor parks, and Operations orchestrates campsite set up and break-down, ensuring everything is in its assigned place. Whether camp storage exists in a pod, a storage unit, or a van,  the Operations Director can obtain any object from within, not unlike Mary Poppins with her carpet bag or a dragon with his treasure trove.
  • The Hours:
  • 3-5 hours/week of remote professional development, training, and prep work from mid-Feb-May to create the best season possible
  • Facilitate 40 hour In-Person Training week, the week before each program’s start date
  • 40 hours/week in-person at your camp location (our programs run from 6-10 weeks)

What skills are we looking for?

  • Experience working with children K-8th grade
  • Leadership Experience – Operations experience a plus
  • Strong organizational and procedural skills, while maintaining flexibility
  • Strong communication, conflict resolution abilities and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work part-time March through May/June (~3-5 hours per week), and full-time in Summer
  • Excitement about working in an outdoor fast-paced environment in the summer
  • In a team, able to lift 25-50 lbs of camp materials without injury
  • Comfortable driving a 9-foot Uhaul sprinter van
  • Camp experience is a bonus, though not required
  • Courageous Commitment; we find that Operations Directors benefit from a 2 year relationship with Plato Learning (at minimum. We strive to help team members grow with the company)

Operations Directors find their way to us from a variety of places, including: school/arts administration, after school operations, non-profit work, stage/production management, project management, camp counseling & leadership, service-oriented entrepreneurs and college and grad school programs

Plato Learning would like to put forth this statistic.  While men apply to jobs when they meet an average of 60% of the requirements, women and other underrepresented people often only apply when they match all criteria. Even if you don't meet every checkbox in the job description, but you think you have what it takes, we encourage you to apply.

Benefits and Compensation:

  • Compensation. A first year Program Director earns approx $5,000-$9,000 over the course of the season, paid at $18-20/hour. This includes:
      • Pre-Season Professional Development (March-May): ~3-5 hours/week
      • During Camp: 40 hours/week for your program’s weeks of camp (7-11 weeks, depending on size and location and includes 1 week of in-person training)
      • Referral Bonus: $50 bonus for any referred applicants who are hired for a seasonal position
  • Opportunity for Advancement. As Plato Learning grows, we’re continually looking within our talented seasonal staff to fill full-time opportunities within the company. Wherever possible, we also connect our staff with career-advancing opportunities outside of Plato Learning.
  • Community. Containing  hundreds of creative-minded heroes, the Plato Learning network carries authors, podcasters, performers, dungeon masters, and many others ready to chat and create.
